RISE Educator Signing Bonus FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the RISE Educator Signing Bonus! Reach out to the RISE inbox with additional questions:

(Updated 9/6/22)

  • Who is eligible for the RISE signing bonus? RISE signing bonuses will be awarded to rehired or new-to-DCPS teachers who commit to teaching in specific high-need content areas at a RISE school for the 2022-2023 school year and were selected for hire by the extended hire date of September 1, 2022. RISE signing bonuses will also be awarded to current teachers transferring from a non-RISE DCPS school.

  • Which high-need content areas are eligible for the RISE signing bonus? Special Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), World Language, Math, Visual and Performing Arts, Science, Health and Physical Education, Career and Technical Education teachers, School Psychologists, and School Social Workers hired at RISE schools. Eligibility for Elementary (all content areas) candidates based on needs of school, as determined by the principal.

  • How much are the RISE signing bonuses? DCPS offers RISE signing bonuses of $2,500. Please note that taxes will be deducted, and the payment will show on the “Extra Duty Pay” portion of the paystub

  • Do I get a RISE signing bonus every year? RISE signing bonuses are only available during your first year at a RISE school. RISE Signing bonuses are one-time signing bonuses. Educators will not be eligible for additional signing bonuses if they have already received a RISE signing bonus.

  • What do I need to do to receive a stipend if I believe I am eligible? Candidates do not need to complete any additional steps to receive signing bonuses if all eligibility qualifications noted above are met.

  • When will I know if I am receiving a stipend? You will receive an email confirmation that you are receiving a stipend once the eligibility confirmation has been finalized.

  • When will I see the bonus reflected in my paycheck? Eligible hires will receive their bonus reflected in one paystub. We anticipate this payment to be received in fall / winter 2022. The exact date of receipt will be subject to the timelines of both DC’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer and DC Payroll agencies.

  • Why do I not get the signing bonus as soon as I accept my offer? These payments are first approved by the DCPS Grants Team, then sent to DC’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) for final approval, and then sent to DC Payroll for processing. Due to this approval and procurement process, we expect payments to be received 2-3 pay -periods after DC Payroll receives them, though this timeline may be longer as it outside of DC Public Schools’ control.
